Mapping Flows of Benefits of MES Across the Globe

This Interactive web mapping application has been built to visualize the flows of economic benefits of Marine Ecosystem Services (MES). The visualization specifically shows the economic benefits of tuna fish from the purse seine fishery within the Western Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) Region.

The objective of the application is to interactively visualize, explore and understand the flows of benefits of MES across the world. The ultimate goal of such an application is to produce an adaptable approach of mapping other global supply value chains, or ES flows of similar characteristics

The data used in this visualize is obtained from the Pacific Possible Project report by World Bank and Nicholas Institute. We provide a new approach of communicating the baseline data in the report focusing on the steps in the global value supply chain as demonstrated below.

Legend details change dynamically based on the map tabs. Select Beneficiary Type; resource, fleet or processing, to view distribution legends.

Terms used in the legend:

Beneficiary - Refers to the different segments in the supply value chain i.e. resource owners, fleet owners and processing.
Resource and Fleet Owners - Countries that own the fishing resource as well as own some fleets fishing in the waters.
Fleet Owners only - Countries that only own fleet vessels but not the resource. Can be referred to as harvest.
Processing - Locations for canning and loining of tuna fish or where they are processed for in preparation for export to markets.

Change map view : At top right corner

Overview: At first glance you see the flow map with sankey and barchart
Resource Button: Changes map to view %distribution of resources
Fleet Button: Changes map to view %distribution of fleet
Processing Button: Changes map to view %distribution of processing

Place mouse over the maps countries and flows to view details.
Place mouse over barchart to view details, linked to map
Place mouse over flows in sankey to view details linked to flows in map
Click the lines or text in the flow legend to interactively filter the flows

Baseline data is derived from reports on th Pacific possible project and includes the following metadata.

Metadata:

Period: 2013.
Attributes: fish catch in metric Tons and % distribution.
Purse seine fishing gear type.
An aggregate sum of all fish species for resource owners, fleet owners and processing
At two resolutions - country level and trans-national (trans-national has however not been mapped)

Disclaimer: Some of the data presented here has been altered and/or omitted for proof of concept of the prototype demonstration. e.g. the location destination for Europe has been altered to the capital of the European Commission (Brussels) instead of the centroid of Europe due ambiguity in information.
