Mapping with EuroRegionalMap Open Data and QGIS
DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP
In this tutorial workshop, we teach participants the principles of proper cartographic styling in an Open Source GIS (QGIS) and help them develop a workflow for using the Open Data EuroRegionalMap.
The objective is to provide the participants with :
- Awareness of the EuroGeographics ‘Open Data for Europe’
- Skills in accessing and using these data in a GIS environment (i.c. QGIS)
- Knowledge of basic cartography rules for useful visualisation for various use-cases
- Hands-on experience in creating a workflow using Open Spatial Data and Open Source GIS
The workshop will be a hands-on tutorial in which the participants are taught about a new data source and a method and software for using it. The programme of the workshop is [links to content will appear later]:

OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE
After the workshop at AGILE (see below) we ar now working to turn the materials into a
OER, an Open Educational Resource. This will allow you to work through the tutorial on
your own, in your own time.
Stay tuned and visit this place again to see the materials appear later this summer. Send
an email to b.j.kobben **at** utwente.nl if you want to be kept up to date...

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARATION:
In an attempt to make our workshop run as smoothly as possible and to maximise your learning, we ask you to come prepared, by:
- making sure you bring a computer with a recent version (3.28 or newer) of the software QGIS installed. If
not installed yet, use the download pages of QGIS.org. If you have not used QGIS before, do not
worry, we will show the basics. But it will help if you have familiarised yourself a bit using e.g. this basics
tutorial...
- downloading the workshop materials in this ZIP archive
You do
not have to install/unzip them yet, but downloading them beforehand will save time and bandwidth during the
workshop.
- requesting download and service permission for the OpenERM data on the EuroGeographics website:
- go to
https://www.mapsforeurope.org/access-data
- under “EuroRegionalMap”, check “Download” and “Web Service” (feel free
to also check others, but we will only use EuroRegionalMap in the workshop)
