HANDS-ON WORKSHOPOpen Source GIS & WebMapping for UN staff20 & 21 November 2012
|
The hands-on workshop "Open Source, Open Standards, Open Data for Geospatial " will be a 2-day workshop on the 20th & 21st November 2012 in Vienna, Austria. It is organized on behalf of the Commission on Open Source Geospatial Technologies of the International Cartographic Association (ICA).
In 2011, the ICA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the
Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo)
with a view to develop global collaboration opportunities for academia,
industry and government organizations in the field of open-source GIS
software and data. This workshop is organized as part of this
ICA-OSGeo MoU vision for spreading the benefits of geospatial
technologies to all. The MoU details can be found at http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/MOU_ICA.
You are invited to sessions to learn about Open Source tools for GIS and
mapping on the Web. We start with an introductory session, and then show
hands-on how to actually do it . So participants bring their laptop, we
provide the theory, the software and guidance. Some dedicated lectures
on topics of modern cartography in the context of open source geospatial
technologies will be given as well.
The workshop is tailored especially for members of staff of United
Nations (UN) bodies and entities. No specific requirements and skills
are needed for participation other than your interest in finding out
about the potential of open source, open standards and open data for
geospatial domain.
This event is organised as a pre-event to
SOMAP 2012, the International Symposium on Service-Oriented
Mapping, in Vienna (Austria), from November 22nd to 23rd 2012. Workshop
participants are invited to join the Icebreaker event of SOMAP on 21st
November, and we of course heartily recommend to join the SOMAP
symposium itself!
